By James Okafor· Reviewed by Rebecca Torres, RDReviewed 2026-06-01

Our food storage tools give exact answers fast: the shelf-life chart covers every food we publish, step-by-step guides handle storage methods, and printable checklists keep the pantry organized. Interactive calculators are in development.

Tools are the fastest way to use this site. Instead of reading a full guide when you need one number, use the shelf-life chart for durations, the storage guides for methods, and the printable checklists for action.

What's here now

  • The food shelf life chart — every food we cover, with pantry, fridge, and freezer times in one table. This is the tool people use most: open the chart.
  • Step-by-step storage guides — freezing, refrigerator storage, dry goods, vacuum sealing, and canning, with equipment lists and storage-times tables. Browse the methods.
  • Pantry checklists — the pantry inventory checklist and seasonal cleanout checklist are printable and designed to live on the pantry door.

Coming next

Interactive calculators are in development: a shelf-life calculator, an expiration-date checker, and a pantry audit generator. Each will duplex with the guides and shelf-life pages already here. Until they launch, the chart and checklists below give you the same answers.

The rest of this page links to the guides and shelf-life pages that act as the working tools of the site today.

Guides that work like tools

Until the interactive calculators launch, these step-by-step guides and printable checklists give you the same answers — exact numbers, ready to use.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a food shelf life calculator?

The shelf-life chart on the shelf-life page is the fastest calculator we have: it lists exact pantry, fridge, and freezer times for every food we cover. Interactive calculators that estimate a specific package's remaining life are in development — the chart already answers the same question.

Can I print a food storage chart?

Yes. Every shelf-life page has a printable table, and the pantry inventory checklist is built to be printed and kept on the pantry door. Use your browser's print option and the chart prints cleanly without the site navigation.

Food Shelf Life Chart

Most foods stay safe in the fridge for 1–7 days and in the freezer for 3–12 months, depending on the food. Keep the fridge at 40°F or below, freeze at 0°F or below, and check spoilage signs instead of trusting best-by dates.

Storage methods

Food Storage Methods

The four everyday storage methods are refrigerating (40°F or below), freezing (0°F or below), vacuum sealing (removes air, prevents freezer burn), and dry-goods storage (airtight, cool, dark). Canning gives the longest shelf-stable life but demands strict safety. Match the method to the food.

Pantry organization

Pantry Organization

Organize your pantry with three systems: zones so everything has a home, FIFO rotation so the oldest food gets used first, and labels with dates so nothing gets forgotten. Airtight containers keep staples fresh and visible. This system cuts waste and takes minutes a week to maintain.

How Long Does Rice Last?

White rice keeps 2+ years in an airtight container in a cool, dark pantry; brown rice only 3–6 months because its bran oils go rancid — freeze brown rice to stop the clock. Uncooked rice freezes indefinitely. Bugs, mold, or a rancid smell mean discard.

Storage method

How to Freeze Meat

Freeze meat fresh, in meal-sized portions, wrapped airtight (freezer bag, plastic, or vacuum seal), labeled with type and date, at 0°F. Raw chicken 9–12 months, beef 6–12, ground 3–4, fish 2–3. Thaw in the fridge, cold water, or microwave — never on the counter.
